Review: 31k

The colourful streets of Hockley, undoubtedly Nottingham’s Bohemian Quarter, promises an abundance of cool indie spots and trendy bars. 31k certainly lives up to this expectation.

From arriving at the bar right until leaving, the service was impeccable. The staff were beyond friendly and attentive. The interior provides a cool and casual ambience, with exposed brick walls, stained glass décor and a lively mezzanine appearing very much New York inspired.

31k boast an extensive list of cocktails, ensuring that those who like the classics as well as those who want to experiment are satisfied. Even if a classic cocktail you have in mind isn’t on the menu, if known, they are happy to serve it. The bar even catered to my non-drinker friend, giving the option to turn any cocktail into a mocktail, and for a cheaper price! Not only is there great choice, but the price isn’t bad either. Sunday through to Thursday all cocktails cost £6, which is considerably cheap for a cocktail bar, making this a great place for students. They also offer a decent amount of wine and beer on tap; yet I would urge anyone who visits to go for the cocktails as it is certainly their speciality.

Also serving a fusion-style food menu that is constantly being re-adapted, 31k is not just a place for drinks. Mains normally cost £12 each but on visiting they were offering a 2-for-1 deal. The format is a build-your-own design – for each dish you chose a main, then the accompanied sauce, carb and greens. They also offer various sides, such as bao buns.

The menu is particularly accessible to those on plant-based diets, with most dishes being vegan. A particular favourite main of ours was the curried squash with spinach and a vegan cream cheese filling, which was absolutely mouth-watering! We definitely managed to wipe our plates clean and I would say that the portions were slightly on the small side but given the price, I was not complaining. Safe to say, I wouldn’t go to 31k if you’re looking for a massive dinner. It is, after all, a bar that serves food, as opposed to a restaurant with a side of cocktails. The food, however, was lovely and certainly differentiates it from other bars I’ve been to.

Ultimately, my experience at 31k has definitely made me want to go back again and I would recommend it to any cocktail lover. It’s slowly becoming one of my favourite cocktail spots in Nottingham given its reasonable price, delish food and drinks, brilliant service and overall good vibe.
